Fans who have spent years waiting to see the Autobots and G.I. Joe team up on the big screen are going to be disappointed. Paramount has officially scrapped its planned Transformers/G.I. Joe crossover, ending one of the most anticipated Hasbro movie projects before it ever reached theaters.
The crossover was first teased at the end of 2023’s Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, when Noah Diaz (Anthony Ramos) was approached by G.I. Joe operative Agent Burke. That scene appeared to set up a shared movie universe featuring two of Hasbro’s biggest properties.
Now, that plan has been abandoned. Paramount has reportedly decided that Transformers and G.I. Joe will continue as separate movie franchises rather than building toward the crossover that fans had been expecting.
For families who grew up with the toys, cartoons and movies, the idea was certainly a tantalizing one. The proposed movie would have brought together giant alien robots and an elite military team in what could have been one of Hasbro’s biggest cinematic events.
A Crossover Years in the Making
The idea didn’t disappear after the initial Rise of the Beasts tease. Paramount spent years developing the concept, with reports in 2024 revealing that a Transformers/G.I. Joe movie was officially being developed and that Derek Connolly had been tapped to write the screenplay.
That lengthy development period made the eventual cancellation particularly frustrating. The project went through multiple stages while Paramount continued figuring out the future of both franchises, leaving fans with plenty of speculation but few concrete details.
At one point, the crossover appeared to remain alive even as separate Transformers and G.I. Joe projects moved forward. The result was a movie that spent years hovering on the horizon without ever reaching production.
Bradley Cooper’s G.I. Joe Movie Changes Everything
The biggest change comes from Paramount’s decision to move ahead with a standalone G.I. Joe reboot from filmmaker Danny McBride, with Bradley Cooper attached to play Duke. That project will reportedly give the franchise a fresh start without needing to incorporate the Transformers mythology.
The new direction effectively closes the door on the crossover. Rather than connecting G.I. Joe to the existing Transformers universe, Paramount is giving the Joes their own story and allowing the filmmakers to establish a new version of the property.
It’s an ending that may disappoint fans who imagined Optimus Prime fighting alongside Duke, but it could ultimately make both franchises easier to follow. As Murphy’s Multiverse puts it, the studio is giving the new G.I. Joe movie “complete creative freedom” by leaving the Transformers mythology behind.
