ESPN has launched ESPN JV, a new YouTube channel designed to introduce children to sports through entertaining, interactive videos. Available now, the channel features athlete stories, trivia, sports challenges and content covering basketball, football, soccer, baseball and tennis.
According to ESPN’s official announcement, the goal is to help children discover sports and develop an interest in becoming fans. ESPN executive Celia Bouza calls the channel “an exciting entry point into sports for the next generation of fans.”
The programming combines education and entertainment, encouraging children to test their knowledge and explore different games. New videos will be added regularly, giving young viewers more opportunities to learn about athletes, sporting moments and the rules of different sports.
Why Youth Sports Participation Matters
ESPN JV arrives as organizations continue looking for ways to encourage children to become more physically active and participate in organized sports. According to Canada’s Sport Information Resource Centre (SIRC), barriers to participation and declining involvement as children grow older remain important concerns.
SIRC highlights that participation often drops during adolescence, particularly among girls. Its research also points to accessibility, cost, time pressures and the availability of suitable programs as factors that can affect whether young people play sports.
The SIRC youth sport participation overview underscores the importance of making sports accessible and appealing. Entertainment can spark curiosity, although watching videos alone cannot overcome practical barriers or guarantee that children will take part in physical activity.
Meet The Sports Explorers and the ESPN Squad
One of ESPN JV’s main attractions is The Sports Explorers, an animated series featuring four original characters: Ez, Shay, PJ and Nora. Known collectively as the ESPN Squad, they introduce young viewers to sports through educational storytelling and entertaining adventures.
StreamTVInsider reports that ESPN Creative Studio developed the characters in collaboration with WSC Sports. The channel also draws on collaborations with Disney Jr. and other entertainment brands.
The strategy reflects ESPN’s effort to connect with children through formats they already enjoy. For parents, the channel could be a starting point for exploring new sports together and encouraging kids to try activities they discover on screen.
