An Oklahoma mother will spend the rest of her life in prison for failing to protect her 11-year-old daughter from sexual abuse by her husband, then letting the child give birth at home with no medical care.

Muskogee County District Judge Timothy King sentenced Cherie Dawn Walker, 34, to seven consecutive life terms on Friday, October 30.

A jury convicted Walker in July. The girl delivered a full-term baby inside the family’s home on August 16, 2025, and prosecutors argued the adults around her either knew or should have. The sentence matches what jurors recommended.

What the Jury Found in the Mother’s Case

Jurors found Walker guilty on seven counts:

  • One count of enabling child sexual abuse
  • Six counts of child neglect

The judge followed the jury’s recommendation and ordered the terms to run consecutively, so each life sentence stacks on the last instead of overlapping.

Walker’s Husband Had Already Been Sentenced to Prison

The girl’s stepfather, Dustin Joel Walker, pleaded guilty earlier this year to one count of sexually abusing a child under 12 and six counts of child neglect. King sentenced him to life in prison plus 42 years. The terms are strict:

  • He must serve the 42-year sentence before the life term begins.
  • He must register as a sex offender.
  • He will be under supervision if he is ever released.
  • He may not have contact with his victims.

How Authorities Learned About the Child’s Birth

The case came to light in 2025 when medical staff alerted authorities after the child was taken to a hospital following the birth. The baby had been delivered at home with no prenatal care and no medical help of any kind.

Both Walkers were arrested and charged that August. Per Assistant District Attorney Janet Hutson, each of them claimed they had no idea the girl was pregnant.

Prosecutors Challenged the Couple’s Claims of Ignorance

Janet said DNA testing showed a 99 percent certainty that Dustin fathered the baby. She also dismissed the idea that the adults were in the dark. The girl was “rather petite,” Janet noted, yet she delivered a normal-sized baby.

Janet described the toll on the child plainly. “This child is traumatized. She’s been through a horrific ordeal,” she said, per Tulsa CBS affiliate KOTV.

Someone had gotten the girl pregnant, Janet said, and she gave birth at home without medical assistance. “This will be her life for the rest of her life,” she added.

The prosecutor also said the girl had been out of school for a period of time and may have been homeschooled. That left fewer chances for teachers or medical professionals to notice the abuse and step in.

The Girl’s Grandmother Also Faced Child Neglect Charges

The girl’s maternal grandmother, Michelle Justus, publicly denied after the arrests that anyone in the family knew. “We did not know this was happening. None of us,” she said, per a local outlet.

Prosecutors maintain the evidence showed the child was neglected over an extended period and that the pregnancy and birth supported the charges. Michelle now faces one count of child neglect. Her trial was scheduled for July but has been pushed back, and court records show it will begin January 12, 2027.

The case went from a family’s living room to a courtroom in just over a year. The baby was born on August 16, 2025 and the Walkers were charged that month.

Dustin pleaded guilty earlier this year; a jury convicted Cherie in July, and the judge sentenced her on October 30. The girl’s mother and stepfather are now both facing the rest of their lives in prison.
