After receiving my first set of essential oils from Simply Earth a few weeks ago, I decided to try my hand at creating my own skin care products. My Simply Earth Essential Oil Box came with soy wax to make homemade candles. After making my two candles, I discovered that I had a little bit of melted wax left over, which I then mixed with some coconut oil to make a simple moisturizer. I loved the result so much that I immediately purchased some beeswax and shea butter so that I could make some more body butter and lip balm. My daughter and I had a blast mixing up our favorite scents together!
My recipe for DIY body butter and lip balm is quite simple. For the first batch that my daughter and I made, we used tablespoons of each of our ingredients. Once I determined that I loved the resulting mixture, I made a larger batch using 1/4-cups (1/4 cup beeswax, 1/2 cup shea butter, 1/4 cup coconut oil). Depending on your desired scent, you can add as many or few drops of essential oils as you want. For example, I made a lightly-scented peppermint lip balm but a more strongly-scented lavender body butter. I now use my DIY lip balm all day and my body butter after showering and as needed. My only problem is that I keep want to make more scents but I can use only so much at once!
Ingredients
- 1 part beeswax
- 2 parts shea butter
- 1 part coconut oil
- essential oil
Directions
- Combine the beeswax, shea butter, and coconut oil in a microwave-safe glass container.
- Heat the ingredients in the microwave for 30-second intervals until melted.
- Carefully remove the melted mixture from the microwave.
- Add essential oil to desired scent.
- Stir the mixture gently for approximately one minute.
- Pour the mixture into containers or lip balm tubes.
- Carefully place the containers or tubes in the refrigerator.
- Allow the body butter and lip balm to solidify.
- Enjoy your homemade body butter or lip balm!
