Gary Oldman has some encouraging words for fans waiting for HBO’s new Harry Potter series. The actor, who played Sirius Black in the original movies, believes the television adaptation could give the beloved books something the films simply didn’t have: enough time to tell the whole story.
Oldman first joined the Wizarding World in 2004’s Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, playing Harry’s godfather, Sirius Black. He returned for several later films, but has previously acknowledged that Sirius never received as much screen time as he deserved.
Now, Oldman says the new television format could make a major difference. “A lot of character detail was sacrificed” in the movies, he explained, because filmmakers had to fit enormous books into traditional feature-length runtimes.
The actor believes HBO’s adaptation will have room to follow the novels much more closely. “I believe [the TV series is] gonna do it pretty much word-for-word, which I think, as a viewer, would be more satisfying,” Oldman said.
Oldman has also made it clear that his positive comments aren’t meant to diminish the original movies. He remains “proud and grateful” to have been part of the franchise, which he described as a cultural phenomenon unlikely to be repeated in quite the same way.
Meet the New Harry, Ron and Hermione
HBO’s new series features an entirely new trio, with Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. The young actors will be joined by major names including John Lithgow as Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Snape and Nick Frost as Hagrid.
The casting process was extensive, with HBO reportedly considering more than 32,000 young actors for the lead role of Harry. The series is planned as a much longer adaptation of the seven books, giving individual stories and characters considerably more room than the movies.
Fans won’t have to wait much longer. The first season, based on Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, is scheduled to premiere on HBO and HBO Max on December 25, 2026.
Why the New Harry Potter Series Is Controversial
Despite the excitement, the reboot has faced controversy since its announcement. Casting choices—particularly Paapa Essiedu as Snape—have generated heated online debate, while some longtime fans have questioned whether the new actors can live up to the original movie performances.
The series has also been criticized for its visual style. Following the latest trailer, some fans complained that the new Hogwarts looks darker and less whimsical than the original films, with one viewer saying, “The magic is totally gone.”
J.K. Rowling’s involvement remains another source of controversy, particularly because of her widely publicized views on transgender rights. Some fans have said they do not want to support the new production because Rowling remains involved as an executive producer.
There is also debate about the intense scrutiny facing the young actors. Ultimately, however, the new Harry Potter series will have to be judged on its own merits—and Oldman’s comments suggest that its biggest strength could be its ability to finally slow down and let the books breathe.
