How to Make a Felt Toddler Christmas Tree

My toddler daughter and I love making crafts together. She also enjoys helping me put up the holiday decorations around the house. She is particularly interested in the Christmas trees and Christmas tree decorations this holiday season. However, many of our ornaments are too delicate for little toddler hands. Thus, to assuage her desires, she and I recently made a felt toddler Christmas tree together as one of our seasonal mother-daughter craft activities.

  • Wood circle

Instructions

To make my daughter her very own felt toddler Christmas tree, I started by buying the materials that I needed for the project. I bought colored felt and a foam cone at my local craft store. My husband asked my dad to cut out a wooden circle the same size as the bottom of the cone to act as the base of the tree. I already had needles, safety pins, thread, buttons, scissors, cookie cutters, and yarn on hand.

After gathering my materials, I started working on the tree portion of the felt toddler Christmas tree. I cut a triangle of dark green felt large enough to cover the foam cone.

I then marked eleven spots on the felt with a green marker. I sewed a button on each of the marks. You can sew the buttons on after you attach the felt to the foam, but sewing the buttons on first is easier. Also be sure to place the lowest buttons high enough from the bottom of the tree to prevent the ornaments from touching the ground.

Once I sewed the buttons on, I wrapped the felt back around the cone. I folded the visible edge of the felt under for a cleaner look. Using a needle and thread, I sewed the side of the felt closed.

Next I worked on sewing the wood circle base onto the bottom of the cone. I cut a piece of green felt slightly larger than the circle. I then sewed the wood and felt circles onto the bottom of the cone. Fold the edges of the felt under for a cleaner look.

After I sewed the base onto the bottom of the cone, I sewed the top of the cone. I added a twelfth button to the very top of the cone.

With the felt Christmas tree completed, I worked on sewing together felt ornaments. I used cookie cutters as my templates, but you can use any shapes or templates for your ornaments.

For each ornament, I traced and cut out two identical shapes from the colored felt. I then sewed the felt pieces together using a blanket stitch. At the top of each ornament, I sewed a yarn hook so that my daughter could hang the ornaments from the buttons on her tree.

I made twelve ornaments: white glitter gingerbread man, green mitten, yellow star, orange bell, pink and blue present, red and white candy cane, red and white stocking, pink angel, blue glass ball, white and dark blue snowman, green evergreen tree, and orange and yellow candle.

The felt toddler Christmas tree that I crafted for my daughter now sits atop the piano in the living room. When the urge to decorate a tree hits, my daughter can happily trim her very own felt toddler Christmas tree!
