A product designed to keep kids safe has now been pulled from the market. Mom Genius is recalling about 920 retractable safety gates after U.S. regulators found that a child’s torso could slip through the gap between the gate and the floor. This dangerous flaw poses a risk of serious injury or death from entrapment.
The recall, announced by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), covers Mom Genius retractable safety gates sold in black and gray through Amazon, Walmart, PurchasingPower, and Perpay between March 2024 and June 2025, at an average price of $50–$75.
The gates stand roughly 33 inches tall, expand up to 118 inches wide, and carry the model number SH.20.006B02 printed on a white side label.
No injuries have been reported, but officials say the risk is severe enough that every gate should be destroyed and replaced.
What Parents Should Do
Families who purchased the gate are urged to stop using it immediately and contact Mom Genius for a full refund.
To receive the refund:
- Cut through the gate’s mesh to render it unusable.
- Take a photo of the destroyed gate.
- Email the photo to product-recall@momgenius.com.
Once the Mom Genius team verifies that all steps have been completed, buyers will receive a full refund for their purchase.
How to Identify a Safer Replacement

Safety experts recommend installing hardware-mounted gates at the top of stairs and ensuring that any gate has a bottom gap of less than 3 inches. As a parent of four, I have always sought out products that meet JPMA certification standards and I stay away from products with retractable mesh barriers for all high-traffic areas around my house.
Why This Recall Matters
Safety gate recalls are rare but serious. A small design flaw — like extra clearance near the floor — can trap a child’s chest while preventing the head from passing through, a scenario that has led to fatal outcomes in past incidents.
Even if you don’t take the time to receive a refund, remember that all used baby products involving a child’s safety should be rendered unusable before you discard the products. In my household, we cut the straps off car seats, strollers, and other baby items before discarding them, especially if they have passed their manufacturer’s suggested expiration date.
