A viral story about car seat safety has gained traction in recent weeks after Emily Perna shared a scary story on Facebook.
In her post, Emily explains that she was taking her son Luca to Bible Study when she noticed the infant car mirror she had installed was causing Luca’s car seat to start smoking.
Perna’s story went viral soon after she shared the following Facebook post:
“It was like when light comes through a window in your house, and you can see dust in the air,” Emily told Today.com. “I actually can’t believe I noticed it; that’s how faint it was at the start.”
“Then it looked like steam,” she said. “Very quickly, it was getting thicker.” Perna’s mom instincts kicked in, and she quickly removed her son from the car seat.
While many items involving children are highly regulated, the team at TheBump notes that “Federal safety standards for baby car mirrors simply don’t exist.”
This isn’t the first time a parent has reported issues with child mirrors. Natausha Furlong took to TikTok and shared a video of her child’s seat smoking.
“I instantly started to search for the source of the smoke with the help of my 9-year-old son,” Furlong told The Post. “We quickly realized that the smoke was coming from the car seat.”
While the chances of a similar situation are low, we still recommend caution when installing a car seat mirror.
