Disney Junior is bringing back one of its most beloved princesses with a brand-new series: Sofia the First: Royal Magic launches Monday, May 25, 2026, airing on Disney Jr. with same-day access through Disney Jr. on Demand, and eight episodes become available on Disney+ the following morning.

The reboot sends Sofia to a new school for royal magic, introduces a fresh cast of classmates, and wastes no time reconnecting families to the Disney Princess universe, with Rapunzel confirmed to appear in the very first episode.

The original Sofia the First, which ran from 2012 to 2018, was far more than a charming preschool series. According to Family Choice Awards, the original series holds the record for the Top 3 cable TV telecasts for Girls 2-5 of all time, and it remains one of the most successful global preschool franchises in The Walt Disney Company’s history. The show also won the Annie Award in 2014 for Best General Audience Animated TV/Broadcast Production for Preschool Children.

That track record means Royal Magic arrives with a built-in audience of parents who grew up watching alongside their kids, plus a whole new generation of young viewers ready to meet Sofia for the first time.

What Happens At Charmswell School For Royal Magic

The central premise of the reboot centers on Sofia enrolling at Charmswell School for Royal Magic, run by the familiar Miss Nettles. While her siblings James and Amber remain at Royal Prep, Sofia steps into a new world focused on potions, charms, and sorcery.

The school is organized into three castles, each named after one of the three good fairies from Sleeping Beauty: Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather. Sofia is placed in Merryweather castle alongside three new classmates named Layla, Zane, and Camila.

The premiere episode puts this new group to the test immediately, as the four castle-mates must race against the other two teams, solving puzzles with both their wits and their magic to earn first pick of the school’s castle pets. Along the way, the show weaves in its signature themes of teamwork, trust, and friendship.

Fans of the original will also be happy to know the Amulet of Avalor is back at the center of the story. Sofia is now tasked with understanding and mastering the full scope of the amulet’s powers, giving the series a longer-term arc that should keep young viewers engaged across episodes.

And keep an eye out for Pepper, a new character described as a puppercorn, a puppy-unicorn hybrid, who promises to be a scene-stealer for the preschool crowd.

Rapunzel Kicks Off The Disney Princess Guest Tradition

One of the most beloved elements of the original series was its rotating roster of Disney Princess guest appearances, each tied to a lesson about courage, kindness, or leadership. Royal Magic revives that tradition immediately.

As confirmed in the newly released official trailer, Rapunzel shows up in the first episode, offering longtime fans an instant signal that the new series understands what made the original resonate.

Her visit also connects directly to the Amulet of Avalor storyline, offering Sofia deeper insight into the powers she is now charged with mastering. The series has already signaled that additional Disney Princess appearances are planned throughout the season.

How And When To Watch

The series launches Monday, May 25, 2026, with new episodes airing on Disney Jr. and through Disney Jr. on Demand. Eight episodes will be available on Disney+ starting Tuesday, May 26, for viewers across the U.S. and a selection of international markets.

For families who want a head start before the premiere, a companion short-form series called Sofia the First: Magical Friends is already available on Disney Jr., Disney+, and the Disney Jr. YouTube channel, introducing viewers to Sofia’s new school and classmates.

Parents.com has also put together a guide for families getting ready to tune in. If your household is already a fan of new and returning kids’ shows in 2026, this one belongs at the top of your watch list.

What makes Royal Magic worth paying attention to is not just the nostalgia factor. The original series worked because it gave young children a protagonist who was genuinely uncertain, kind, and still figuring things out.

The reboot appears to preserve that emotional core while raising the stakes: Sofia is now the most magically gifted princess in the realm, but raw talent without discipline is its own kind of challenge.

That is a story arc parents can actually talk through with their kids, whether the lesson is about humility, hard work, or the value of asking for help. The Rapunzel appearance in episode one is a smart creative choice, but the real hook for families is a show that has always known how to make character growth feel exciting for a four-year-old.
