Disney and Macy’s celebrate a century of parade history
Mickey Mouse is getting a magical makeover for this year’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. The new Sorcerer’s Apprentice Mickey Mouse balloon, inspired by Disney’s Fantasia, will feature Mickey in his iconic red wizard’s robe and star-covered hat as he flies above New York City during the 100th parade.
The character has an impressive parade history: Mickey first appeared as a Macy’s balloon in 1934, and this year marks his 21st balloon appearance. The new design gives the familiar character a fresh look while connecting the celebration to one of Disney’s most recognizable animated performances.
Mickey isn’t the only Disney character with a history in the parade. Donald Duck, Goofy, Minnie Mouse and other Disney favorites have all appeared over the years, helping make the parade a showcase for generations of beloved characters.

100 Years of Macy’s Thanksgiving Magic
This year’s event is particularly significant because 2026 marks the 100th Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Macy’s began its yearlong celebration early in 2026, calling the milestone the centennial year of the Thanksgiving parade while also celebrating the retailer’s 50th anniversary of its Fourth of July fireworks.
The parade’s history stretches back to 1924, although interruptions during World War II mean 2026—not 2024—is the 100th edition. That makes Mickey’s return especially fitting: Disney’s most famous character has been part of the parade story for more than nine decades.
