After a disappointing theatrical run, Mando and “Baby Yoda” are heading home
Fans who missed Star Wars: The Mandalorian & Grogu in theaters won’t have to wait much longer to catch the galaxy’s favorite duo at home. The Jon Favreau-directed movie will begin streaming on Disney+ on September 2, 2026, giving families another chance to see Din Djarin and Grogu’s first big-screen adventure.
The movie takes place after the events of The Mandalorian Season 3 and Ahsoka, following Mando and his young apprentice as they take on a dangerous mission involving the warlord Commander Coin and Rotta the Hutt.
A Box Office Disappointment
The theatrical release was hardly the triumphant return Disney and Lucasfilm may have hoped for. Despite the popularity of its television predecessor, The Mandalorian & Grogu ultimately earned approximately $345 million worldwide, making it the lowest-grossing Star Wars movie of the Disney era—even falling below 2018’s Solo: A Star Wars Story.
That result is particularly striking because The Mandalorian had become one of Disney+’s signature successes. The movie’s underperformance suggests that having a popular streaming series doesn’t necessarily guarantee that audiences will pay theatrical prices to see its continuation on a big screen.
There’s also an intriguing wrinkle: the movie reportedly began life as a planned fourth season of The Mandalorian before being reworked into a feature. That episodic DNA may have contributed to the film feeling more naturally suited to streaming than the multiplex.
From Streaming Sensation to Big-Screen Adventure
The Mandalorian debuted in 2019 and quickly became one of the most recognizable parts of the modern Star Wars universe. At its center was Pedro Pascal’s armored bounty hunter and Grogu, the mysterious Force-sensitive child immediately nicknamed “Baby Yoda” by fans.
Grogu became a genuine pop-culture phenomenon, attracting viewers far beyond the traditional Star Wars audience. His combination of adorable appearance, mysterious powers and relationship with Mando helped make The Mandalorian one of the franchise’s most accessible entries for younger viewers and families.
Now, the movie gets an important second life. If its theatrical run disappointed, Disney+ could be exactly where The Mandalorian & Grogu was meant to be all along.
