One Last Ride for Optimus Prime
A new animated Transformers short gives families and fans one more chance to hear the unmistakable voice of Peter Cullen as Optimus Prime. Transformers: Optimus Prime Awakening features what is being described as Cullen’s final performance as the iconic Autobot leader.
The short is scheduled to premiere September 9 on YouTube, giving parents and young Transformers fans an easy way to experience the performance together. The project was created by Transformers fan and animator Chris DePetrillo, who used archival and newly recorded material to bring Optimus back to life.
For longtime fans, the appeal is about more than nostalgia. Cullen’s deep, commanding delivery helped define Optimus Prime for generations, making this short an unexpected farewell to one of animation’s most recognizable voices.
Remembering the Voice of Optimus
Cullen died August 26, 2026 at age 84, closing a voice-acting career that stretched across television, film, commercials and video games. While he voiced numerous characters, Optimus Prime became his signature role after the original Transformers animated series debuted in 1984.
Cullen wasn’t simply the voice behind Optimus; his performance helped establish the character’s personality as a courageous, compassionate and authoritative leader. His career also included another beloved animated icon, Eeyore in Winnie-the-Pooh, demonstrating the extraordinary range behind that instantly recognizable voice.
The final performance therefore carries unusual weight for Transformers fans. Hearing Cullen say goodbye as Optimus offers a connection between the franchise’s earliest days and its current generation of viewers.
40 Years and Still Transforming
Few children’s franchises have demonstrated the staying power of Transformers. From the original toys and 1980s animated series to blockbuster live-action films, animated features and new television projects, the battle between Autobots and Decepticons has remained part of popular culture for more than four decades.
That legacy is getting another theatrical celebration with a re-release of 1986’s The Transformers: The Movie. Fathom Entertainment announced screenings for the animated classic, giving families and longtime fans an opportunity to experience the film on the big screen.
The timing makes Cullen’s final Optimus performance especially fitting. As Transformers continues introducing the Autobots to new generations, Optimus Prime Awakening provides a brief but meaningful reminder of the voice that helped make the franchise what it is today.
