When my 7-year-old daughter asked me to start playing Roblox in 2024, I wasn’t sure what to think. I had heard that it’s a super fun game for people of all ages, on the one hand. However, I also heard about the negative aspects of the game, including adults maliciously targeting children.
But I thought, “You know what? As long as I monitor her gameplay closely, what could go wrong?”
Now, I’m glad that I let her create a Roblox account. She plays with her 10-year-old half-sister (who I consider my bonus daughter) almost every day of the week through a remote meetup (with screen time limits, of course). They also love playing side by side in person together when I send my daughter to her dad’s and sister’s house for their bi-weekly sleepover.
Here are the 15 best Roblox features everyone should try, according to my seven and 10-year-old kids. There’s also a bonus feature parents should know about to keep their kids’ gaming experience safe.
Robux
“Mom! I want Robuxxxxx!” This is what I would hear my daughter shout about whenever she’s in the middle of a Roblox-playing session. She put so much emphasis on the extra “x” sound at the end when she would plead for me to give her some. Finally, I gave in and started a Roblox monthly subscription for her that would come out of her allowance. Her father told me to cancel the subscription and that we could get the Roblox gift cards instead for her. I don’t believe in buying digital game currency with real money, but I am starting to see why it’s such a great feature.
Why Robux Is An Awesome Feature: Robux is great for upgrading your avatar with different outfits. They are also needed for game passes to more premium gaming titles, and Roblox unlocks exclusive items that aren’t available to earn in the game.
Reset Character Feature (AKA The ‘Kill Button’)
Sometimes, one of the games starts upsetting my daughter, so I see her use the “reset character” (or what players call the kill button) feature frequently. Her avatar returns to its original starting point, allowing her to try the game again or explore a new one. This “kill button” can be accessed by clicking the Roblox icon in the top left-hand corner of your game screen, choosing “Respawn,” and then selecting “Yes” when the prompt asks if you are sure you want to reset your character. I blocked out my daughter’s and the participating players’ names for privacy.
Why the Reset Character Feature Is an Awesome Feature: Avatars who are stuck in an obstacle or otherwise start glitching can use the reset character button to keep playing with fewer issues. Falling through the map or getting trapped in an in-game bug is super annoying, but this feature fixes those issues. Sometimes you need a fresh start in the game and it can calm down frustrated younger players who just need another try.
“Kill All” Button
Some Roblox games have a “kill all” button, which is usually prominent amongst game admins. Sometimes, there will be different words used, like “Nuke” to represent the “kill all” button, like the game shown in this screenshot. If a player has VIP privileges or a specific game pass, they may have access to the “kill all” button, depending on these special parameters. When someone activates this button, everyone in the server dies instantly. This encourages a reset for all players, but for those not expecting it, the feature can sometimes be annoying.
Why the ‘Kill All’ Button Is An Awesome Feature: This button is mostly present in admin command games or sandbox and chaos-based ones. Players who like to troll for fun or prefer a server reset may want to use the “kill all” button. It helps players who are in a pickle, but it means having to strategize again for those who were performing well on the server.
Avatar Customization
My daughter loves it when she gets new clothes for her avatar. She’s excited to upgrade her avatar by dressing it in cute, chic clothes. Expressing herself through her avatar’s appearance is one of her favorite Roblox features. At the time of this article, she dressed herself in a Cinnamoroll-themed outfit because that’s her favorite Sanrio character.
Why Avatar Customization Is An Awesome Feature: You can customize your avatar to be anything you want. Dress as a fuzzy animal, a trendy fashionista, a mythical creature, a futuristic cyborg, or a favorite character from a television series. It’s a great way for young gamers to express themselves and there are plenty of outfits for their favorite characters and trends.
Friends & Chat System
Roblox features an in-game chat and friends list, allowing players to team up in various games. Staying connected is essential in this MMORPG universe, so you don’t lose great in-game friends or players who have helped you in the past. I allow my daughter to chat with other players, besides her elder half-sister, as long as they exhibit good behavior. I always remind her to inform me of players who are being mean or inappropriate to her.
Why the Friends & Chat System Is An Awesome Feature: Collaborating with other players to solidify a gaming strategy and engaging in fun role-playing activities are other reasons why this feature is awesome. You may find friends on Roblox that you otherwise wouldn’t have met if it weren’t for this chat feature. For my daughters, they get to communicate as they play together, even when they are not together in the same physical location.
Game Search & Recommendations List
My daughter and her elder sister love to try new games on the Roblox platform. There are millions available to play to the point I hear them switching to a new game at least every 5 to 10 minutes when they are on a Messenger call together.
Why the Game Search & Recommendations List Are Awesome Features: Based on your prior play history, Roblox’s game search algorithm will generate a recommendations list so you can find new games you are bound to love. My daughter was playing a Building Blocks game and a Squishmallow one when I was writing this article. She also loves trying out new makeup and fashion-based games. As your kids get older and their interests change, so does the recommended games list.
Private Servers
My daughter and her sister prefer private servers for a more enjoyable gaming experience, free from the distractions of other players. Some games, like Tower Too! (server details shown in the above screenshot), allow you to make a private server for free. Other games may require you to pay around 25 Robux to access that feature. Hence, this depends on the game developer’s discretion. I am not as worried about Internet randos trying to target my girls, and they have so much fun with whatever game they choose to play.
Why Private Serves Are An Awesome Feature: Beyond friends and family playing safely on private servers, classrooms, and content creators can take advantage of this feature, too. Children can play Roblox on a safe, private server during their free time after completing a school assignment. Content creators can stream and show their followers new games without the distractions of other online players.
In-Game Emotes
In-game emotes are another way players can express themselves without words, just like when they customize their avatars. Special dances and moves are available in various games, allowing players to move in a fun and engaging way. Perfect for roleplaying or victory dances, emotes bring an avatar to life. My daughter says she uses these emotes sometimes, but not all the time.
Why In-Game Emotes Are An Awesome Feature: Emotes make the world seem more human. Rather than walking around and just playing the games, avatars can be more human-like with these fun emotes.
Cross-Platform Play
Although this does not happen often, my daughter sometimes plays on a platform other than her tablet. She has played Roblox a couple of times on a desktop at our local Family Success Center. When we start visiting the library more often in the summer together, I bet she will want to play Roblox on the desktop computer there, too!
Why Cross-Platform Play Is An Awesome Feature: The cross-platform feature gives players control over how they prefer their gaming experience to unfold. Gaming on the go is best on mobile devices, including smartphones and tablets. Playing on a laptop or desktop enhances the immersive experience of some players, who desire a large-screen experience.
Daily Login Bonuses (For Select Games)
Certain mini-games give players log-in bonuses when they interact with them daily. Extra Robux, in-game items, or character boosts keep players coming back to those games, rewarding them with the bonuses. The example above is what a Daily Login Bonus screen may look like.
Why Daily Login Bonuses Are An Awesome Feature: When you can’t afford to purchase Robux with real money, earning them through daily login bonuses is awesome. You can continually access premium in-game resources by keeping your Robux up. Hence, regularly logging into your favorite games is important for maintaining access to more Robux and other extras.
Events and Seasonal Updates
Sometimes, there are daily events available for you to try, drawing in many players at once because of their popularity for that day. When you are searching your game page, look for the games that say “event” on them, so you can participate before time runs out. My daughter doesn’t talk much about the events and seasonal updates, but I will be encouraging her to check them out more often as long as they are age-appropriate.
Why Events and Seasonal Updates Are an Awesome Feature: Limited-time events and seasonal updates make the game more festive, challenging, and engaging. For example, players may only have a limited time to purchase Christmas apparel for their avatar before it’s not available again until the next holiday. It’s easy to see why my daughters consider this part of the platform to be among the best Roblox features.
Achievements & Badges
Roblox games award achievements and badges when you reach a specific milestone for the mini-games. For example, I noticed that when playing on my daughter’s account, she received a welcome badge every time I visited a new game that wasn’t already in her play history.
Why Achievements and Badges Are an Awesome Feature: Achievements and badges give players a sense of accomplishment. They may have to beat a high score or achieve some other milestone before earning one of these. They serve as bragging rights, adding replay value and a challenging element to Roblox overall.
Inviting/Joining Friends
Inviting and joining friends in a gaming experience is one of the best highlights of playing Roblox. Everything is, of course, better with people you know. My eldest usually answers my bonus daughter’s invite to a game when I listen to them preparing to log on to one. My bonus daughter informs my eldest about the game’s name, she sends an invitation, and then my eldest will join that game.
Why Inviting/Joining Friends Is An Awesome Feature: Joining friends on a game with a private server makes it more comfortable and safer for interaction with individuals you already know. For some people, it’s nerve-racking to play with new people on a random server, so getting to invite other friends along makes the play experience much more digestible and enjoyable.
Quests & Role Playing Systems
Different role-playing games, such as Twilight Daycare! (both of my daughters’ favorite game), reward you as you complete quests. These journeys become gamified to add depth to the story, allowing you to pretend you are a parent, baby, police officer, astronaut, or some other character. The game progresses as you level up with your chosen character, keeping the gameplay experience fresh and the replay value high.
Why Quests & Role Playing Systems Are An Awesome Feature: With millions of games to choose from, players can roleplay as anything they want. They can also change up what they are to experience the game from the other side of the coin. For example, in Twilight Daycare!, you can choose to be a caregiver or a baby. These are great features because you can experience role-playing games from diverse angles as you choose the different roles. One time, my daughter acted as a baby and her sister acted as a caregiver while playing Twilight Daycare!. My eldest conveniently took a screenshot when they were playing the game together recently.
Obby Checkpoints
Obstacle courses, also known as “obbies” among Roblox players, can be quite challenging. I’ve heard my daughter’s frustrations with obbies and have watched her play some of them before. I advise her to take a deep breath and try re-strategizing if she ever dies in the middle of one. The obby checkpoints are extremely helpful, especially for beginner gamers like my daughter, who is still learning her hand-eye coordination skills.
Why Obby Checkpoints Are An Awesome Feature: Checkpoints are among the best Roblox features because they help obstacle course gameplay remain fair and manageable for all players, regardless of age or experience. It was my first time playing The WaterOut Obby when I wrote this article. I didn’t know you had to avoid the red parts of the obstacle course. It was helpful that I reached a checkpoint so I could start from there on the next round. Who wants to restart an entire obstacle course if they were almost to the end but then died before finishing? Said no one!
Bonus Feature for Parents: Parental Controls
Parental controls are necessary, especially for younger games. Roblox can be a fun, yet addictive game, so setting screen time limits is important for your child’s development. They can still enjoy playing the game without being on it so long that they lose sight of playing with toys or engaging in other non-tech hobbies.
Set content maturity as “Minimal” for younger kids or as “Restricted” for the eldest of players aged 17 and up. Designate a spending limit so your child cannot spend any more money in the game than your preferred limit.
Communication settings allow you to customize chat settings. Specific chat features need parental permission if a player is aged 12 or younger. Block specific experiences you believe are inappropriate for your child. You can manage the blocked experiences at any time by visiting the account settings.
To use parental controls, you must create a parent account and link it to your child’s profile. Doing so will make it easy for you to update controls, whether through the app or on Roblox.com. While my daughters may not have chosen this, I personally consider this among the best Roblox features because it keeps my kiddos safe while allowing them to enjoy the platform without issues.
Join In On the Roblox Fun
Testing out Roblox for myself over this past week and watching my children play it together has been a great experience! Especially when they’re young, test the games your children are playing to ensure they’re safe and fun. I came across a gaming experience related to the devil that wasn’t age-appropriate for my eldest daughter, so I will be activating my parental controls email to prevent her from viewing mature content. Staying proactive and vigilant is better than a game scaring your little one or a predatory individual messing up their gaming experience.
Remember, while my seven and 10-year-old consider these among the best Roblox features, as your child gets older (or is already older) they likely have their favorite advanced games and features, so don’t be afraid to ask them what they love about Roblox, it could end up being a great bonding experience!
