I grew up in the golden age of the best kids’ sports movies. The 1980s and the 1990s produced iconic classics that spanned many popular sports and a few slightly less celebrated options.
Now that I’m a father of four, I’ve started watching my favorite kids’ sports movies with my children. These are the movies they love so far, why they are great family movies to watch with your kids, and some important life lessons they teach.

Set in the early 1960s, it showcases the adventures of a group of young boys who bond over their love for baseball while also tackling themes of friendship, teamwork, and perseverance.

Space Jam (1996)

Cool Runnings came out when I was 13 years old, and I still recall being inspired by its story. This feel-good comedy is based on the unlikely but true story of Jamaica’s first bobsled team competing at the 1988 Winter Olympics. Led by their determined coach Irv Blitzer (John Candy), this unlikely group of bobsled novices faces adversity with humor, heart, and unwavering spirit as they strive to prove themselves in unfamiliar territory.
Cool Runnings is a fantastic movie for families because it combines humor with an inspiring true story. It teaches kids about perseverance, teamwork, and the importance of chasing dreams, no matter how unconventional they may seem. The lighthearted tone and memorable characters make it a fun and uplifting experience for all ages.
The Mighty Ducks Franchise (1992 – 1996)
The entire Mighty Ducks franchise holds a special place in my heart. I grew up in Canada, and hockey is the country’s national pastime. I love the series so much that I was fully onboard when it was recently rebooted with the short-live Disney Plus series, The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers.
This classic trilogy spans from 1992 to 1996 and follows the journey of an underdog youth hockey team as they strive for victory on the ice. Spearheaded by their reluctant coach Gordon Bombay, played by Emilio Estevez, the unlikely group learns important life lessons about camaraderie, determination, and self-belief while facing various adversaries on and off the rink.
The Mighty Ducks movies are excellent for family viewing because they emphasize the importance of teamwork, resilience, and believing in oneself. Centered around young foster child Roger Bomman (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), this delightful movie explores themes such as faith, hope, and perseverance while providing audiences with comedic antics from both celestial beings and earthly players alike. I recently re-watched Angels in the Outfield with my kids, and while it feels dated, it’s still a fun movie that leaves everyone rooting for the team and its many unique characters.

Rookie Of The Year (1993)
Released in 1993 and directed by Daniel Stern, Rookie of the Year tells the story of 12-year-old Henry Rowengartner, who discovers newfound arm strength following a freak accident that propels him into becoming a major league baseball pitcher for the Chicago Cubs. I’m a huge Cubs fan, so I’ll admit that I’m slightly biased when choosing this film.

Air Bud Franchise (1997 – Present)
Spanning over multiple sequels since its debut in 1997, the Air Bud Franchise follows the delightful adventures of Buddy – an extraordinary golden retriever gifted with exceptional athletic abilities who conquers various sports, including basketball, football, and soccer. While my kids love all of the Air Bud movies, the first film, which focuses on basketball, is by far the best installment, perhaps because of its novelty.
This franchise is great for families because it’s fun, lighthearted, and full of heart. The themes of friendship and teamwork are presented in a way that’s accessible for kids, while Buddy’s humor and adorable antics keep everyone entertained. It’s a perfect choice for family movie nights, especially for animal lovers.
Little Big League (1994)
