Bindi Irwin, the daughter of The Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin, is all grown up and has a family of her own, and they’re very much in the public eye. Along with her husband Chandler Powell and their precious 3-year-old daughter Grace, Irwin can often be seen at the Australia Zoo, on social media, or in her various nature and conservation roles, cuddling and adoring animals that aren’t always the ones traditionally seen as cuddly or adorable.
The public admiration for Steve Irwin has remained attached to his daughter, who viewers have watched grow up as she appeared with her dad and as an actress in productions from Free Willy: Escape from Pirate’s Cove to My Babysitter’s A Vampire and Dancing With The Stars.
Now that they’re watching Bindi’s family grow, people have questions — but the activist and conservationist has a warning.
Everyone Wants To Know How Many Little Irwins To Expect
It’s understandable: Steve Irwin left behind two children who are both carrying on his work in their own ways, and their fans want to know if they’ll be raising more babies to continue that brilliant legacy. Bindi and her husband Chandler say they’re asked almost daily whether they’ll have more kids.
However, it’s easy to forget that public figures are also human beings with their own thoughts, feelings, experiences, and traumas and that they do have private lives. In a Q&A at the Australia Zoo, Bindi first allowed her husband to share some of that private, personal experience, then very gently admonished those who keep pushing.
Chandler Powell Opens Up About Bindi’s Medical History
Nobody’s medical history is our business unless they choose to share it. That’s still true when we see so much of someone’s life in public.
However, Powell spoke a little about his wife’s struggle with her pregnancy and reproductive health. He explained:
“And Bindi, a lot of you may already know, she went through a big journey with endometriosis. And basically it was an absolute miracle that we had Grace and we love Grace so much and are reveling in every little moment we have with her, with our little miracle baby.”
Irwin opened up about this to a degree back in 2023 when she went through surgery to alleviate her symptoms. She said at the time that she had debated being public with her private medical situation but decided to share because so many other women also suffered.
Bindi’s 2023 Surgery & Public Statement
Irwin shared that she had suffered for a decade and that she had undergone surgery to address the symptoms. At the time, she called on people to be “gentle” and to “pause” before asking any woman about having more children.
She noted that there is a lot of stigma around reproductive health and that previous doctors had told her she just had to deal with the pain. It can be a battle actually to receive needed medical treatment as a woman. She pleaded:
“Please be gentle & pause before asking me (or any woman) when we’ll be having more children. After all that my body has gone through, I feel tremendously grateful that we have our gorgeous daughter. She feels like our family’s miracle.”
Bindi Reiterates Call For Caution & Gentleness In New Q&A
Nonetheless, Bindi says that people continue to press her and her husband more or less daily to know when they’ll have more kids. For someone dealing with reproductive health struggles, those questions can be particularly harsh, even though they’re well-intended, as she acknowledged. She said:
“I really appreciate everybody who’s curious to see if we will have another child, but I do just want to send it out there that, remember to be careful when you ask this question, because you never know what’s happening in someone’s life. In a family’s world, you know, everything may seem fine on the outside, and on the inside their own personal journey might have been filled with turmoil and challenges, that you know, you can’t even fathom. So while I understand why a lot of people ask us this question and I appreciate the kindness and good intent behind it it’s also a really tricky question for many, many people who maybe can’t have another baby can’t have a baby at all.”
For Anyone Who Still Wants To Ask, The Answer Is She Doesn’t Know
Bindi says that it’s certainly possible there will be another miracle in their lives but that it’s not the plan. She and Chandler are happy with their family of three; they adore Grace and are focused on their lives with her.
However, she says, if they’re “blessed with another little one down the road…that would be incredible.”
In the meantime, her reminder to be gentle and stay out of other people’s reproductive choices was incredibly delicate, with lots of emphasis on how much she appreciates the sentiment and good intentions. Still, it’s clear that she’s among the many women who are hurt by these constant questions.
