A popular high chair designed by luxury baby gear brand Bugaboo is being recalled in Canada and the United States due to a safety risk that could cause the legs to detach from the frame, potentially resulting in a child falling. The affected product is the Bugaboo Giraffe High Chair, a sleek, adjustable seat intended for use by children and adults up to 220 pounds.
Health Canada, in collaboration with the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), issued the recall after determining that the chair’s legs can become unstable if the screws connecting them to the seat frame were not properly tightened during assembly. The issue increases the risk of the legs detaching when a baby is seated, especially when weight is applied to the footrest.
The recall affects approximately 2,325 units sold in Canada and 18,280 units sold in the United States. The Bugaboo Giraffe High Chairs were sold between March 2023 and April 2025 at various retailers. All affected models were manufactured in the Czech Republic.
The recalled chairs can be identified by their item codes, which are printed on the bottom of the seat. The recall includes five versions:
- White (200008001)
- Neutral Wood/White (200008002)
- Warm Wood/Grey (200008003)
- Black (200008004)
- Blue (200008005)
Although no injuries have been reported in Canada as of April 18, 2025, the CPSC confirmed 22 incidents in the United States, including 13 reports of minor injuries. Internationally, similar safety alerts have been issued in the United Kingdom and Australia, with at least one injury reported overseas. Several retailers, including Boots in the UK and Baby Bunting in Australia, have since pulled the product from shelves.
Parents and caregivers are advised to immediately discontinue use of the high chair and contact Bugaboo for a complimentary repair kit. The kit includes redesigned screws, an improved Allen key, and detailed instructions to ensure the legs are properly secured. Bugaboo is also proactively contacting verified purchasers and offers a serial number checker on its website for concerned customers.
While waiting for the repair kit, Bugaboo advises users to lower the footrest to the lowest possible setting as a temporary safety measure. The company is asking customers not to sell, donate, or dispose of the product until it has been repaired, in accordance with Canada’s Consumer Product Safety Act.
The Bugaboo Giraffe High Chair retails for approximately $380, with Canadian prices often exceeding $499 when accessories are included.
