Illumination Entertainment has officially pulled back the curtain on its next major cinematic venture, releasing a dreamy, charming first teaser trailer for Not Alone. Strikingly set to David Bowie’s iconic “Space Oddity,” the teaser signals a refreshing, high-concept shift for the powerhouse animation studio.

Moving away from the established blockbuster worlds of Minions, Mario, and Gru, this fully original sci-fi animated comedy is slated to blast off into theaters on April 16, 2027.

According to the official synopsis, sparks fly immediately when Joe and Fran are brought together to prepare for the revolutionary spacecraft’s inaugural launch—though “neither is particularly adept at romance.”

Their awkward love story becomes infinitely more complicated when three tiny, unruly, and adorable alien fugitives named Dunk, Welly, and Shirm take refuge in Joe’s home. The extraterrestrial trio is on the run from a zealous yet inept space officer named Zandro and quickly realizes that Fran’s plant-powered rocket is their only ticket back to safety.

Illumination Cast Big Names For ‘Not Alone’

The film boasts a star-studded, A-list voice cast led by four-time Academy Award nominee Timothée Chalamet and Emmy-nominated Selena Gomez, marking Chalamet’s first-ever feature-length animated role.

The supporting comedic cast features heavy hitters from both sides of the Atlantic. The mischievous alien trio is voiced by renowned British comedic talents Rob Brydon (Dunk), Diane Morgan (Welly), and Jamie Demetriou (Shirm), while Ted Lasso star Brett Goldstein lends his distinct growl to the bumbling antagonist, Officer Zandro. Academy Award winner Allison Janney and Lamorne Morris round out the stellar ensemble.

Illumination Is Putting Filmmaking First

Behind the scenes, the project marks a significant structural evolution for Illumination. Rather than outsourcing outside talent, the film is steered by a powerhouse “homegrown” directing team consisting of studio veterans Eric Guillon, Claire Dodgson, and Jonathan Del Val.

Guillon, a prolific production designer who previously co-directed Despicable Me 3, takes the reins alongside veteran editor Dodgson and Minions: The Rise of Gru co-director Del Val.

Industry expectations are exceptionally high, with insiders noting that Not Alone represents an intentional creative pivot for the studio. Speaking on the project, Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri emphasized its artistic importance.

“The big story there is that we’re going back to originality,” Meledandri stated. He added that the studio is intentionally embracing a more filmmaker-driven pipeline, drawing heavily on the collaborative spirit of the French animation tradition.

Illumination Has Become An Animation Powerhouse

Following a string of highly successful franchise sequels, industry analysts view Not Alone as a calculated risk that could define Illumination’s creative identity for the late 2020s.

By blending a grounded romantic-comedy structure with whimsical alien antics, the studio appears poised to deliver a film that captures both the visual charm of classic animation and the massive box-office pull of its marquee stars.
