Making Homemade Detergent with Meliora K

To save my family some money, I first started making my own homemade laundry detergent last summer. After publishing my recipe, I received an offer to try the Meliora K No Frills Soap Bar. Unlike the Fels-Naphtha in my original recipe, Meliora K is a fragrance-free soap bar that contains only soap made from organic cocos nucifera (coconut) oil, water, and sodium hydroxide. Once I ran out of my original batch of detergent at the beginning of February, I modified my recipe to include the Meliora K.

Ingredients

  • 3 bars of Meliora K No Frills Soap Bar
  • 55 ounces of washing soda
  • 6 cups of Borax
  • 3 cups of OxiClean

Directions

  1. Use a grater to grind the Meliora K into small bits.
  2. Use a food processor to grind up Meliora K bits with some washing soda.
  3. Combine the powdered Meliora K with the remaining washing soda, Borax, and OxiClean in a large container.
  4. Mix thoroughly.
  5. Use two to three tablespoons per load of laundry.

The first load of laundry with which I used my new laundry detergent included dirty cloth napkins and kitchen towels. As I transferred the washed laundry to my dryer, I immediately noticed a lack of odor. I could not smell any yucky kitchen smells or soap scent on my clean linens. As someone sensitive to odors at times, I definitely liked my first encounter with my new homemade detergent. Unlike Fels-Naphtha, Meliora K does not contain any added fragrance, which I consider a huge plus.

As I have continued washing my regular laundry in my new detergent, I have become more and more impressed. For my laundry and my children’s laundry, I use two tablespoons. For my husband’s laundry, I use three. All our clothing and towels come out smelling and looking clean. In fact, I am now even more positive that our laundry is clean because I smell nothing. The lack of fragrance in Meliora K means that no added scents are masking any unclean fabrics.

Individual bars of Meliora K cost $3.99 each. However, if you buy in bulk, the soap costs even less. A three-pack costs $10.99, or $3.66 each. A six-pack costs $20.29, or $3.38 each. And a ten-pack costs $31.89, or $3.18. In comparison, a single bar of Fels-Naphtha cost me $4.62 for a single bar. Not only do I like the ingredients and performance of Meliora K better, but the price is also significantly lower. When I need more soap for my homemade detergent in the future, I will definitely buy more Meliora K No Frills Soap Bar!
