Valentine’s Day is only two short weeks away. My kids and I have been reading valentine-themed books since the beginning of the year in preparation for the holiday. Many of our reads have come from the library, but we also have an ever-growing home library. I am always happy to add a new book to our collection. Thus, when recently offered the chance to feature three new titles from Quarto, I eagerly accepted the opportunity. I received copies of ABC Love by Christiane Engel, Love by Corrinne Averiss, and Ways to Say I Love You by Marilyn Singer. All three are perfect for Valentine’s Day or any time you want to share some love with your little readers.
ABC Love
Written and illustrated by Christiane Engel, ABC Love is a 36-page board book recommended for readers between the ages of 3 and 6 in preschool through first grade. The book introduces young children to important concepts such as love, joy, and understanding while teaching the letters of the alphabet. Filled with colorful illustrations and easy-to-understand text, the book promotes family togetherness. My 3-year-old asks me to read the book aloud again and again while the text is perfect for my 6-year-old who is an emerging reader.
Christiane Engel is an award-winning illustrator and author of children’s books. Her illustrations are instantly recognizable, and she loves creating quirky characters. In addition to ABC Love, she is also the author and illustrator of ABC Yoga, ABC Baby Signs, ABC Earth-Friendly Me, and ABC Mindful Me, other titles in the ABC for Me series.

Written by Corrinne Averiss and illustrated by Kirsti Beautyman, Love is a 32-page hardback picture book about separation and love recommended for readers between the ages of 4 and 6 in preschool through first grade. Love abounds in Tess’ family, but, when Tess must leave her family for the first time and go to school, she worries that love will not be able to find her. Her mother explains that love is like a string, connecting people over time and distance. I absolutely love sharing this heartwarming story with such an important message about love with my three children.
Corrinne Averiss is an award-winning author. Her first book, A Dot in the Snow, was shortlisted for the CILIP Greenaway award, the oldest and best-loved children’s book award in the United Kingdom. Love is the third title in a trio of feel-good picture books that includes Joy and Hope. Kirsti Beautyman won the Picture Hooks Illustrator of the Year Award in 2017.

Ways to Say I Love You
Written by Marilyn Singer and illustrated by Alette Straathof, Ways to Say I Love You is a 32-page hardback picture book recommended for readers between the ages of 4 and 6 in preschool through first grade that celebrates all the ways to say “I love you!” From snuggling garter snakes to cozy bear hugs, the book shares the ways in which humans and animals share affection for one another. In addition to the sweet story that is the perfect reading level for my 6-year-old, I enjoy reading about the additional animals in the last few pages of the book.
Marilyn Singer is a multi-award-winning children’s author who has written many titles including the Tallulah series as well as other poetry, picture, fiction, and nonfiction books. Alette Straathof graduated from the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam, The Netherlands in January 2016. She hides small details in her illustrations for readers to find.
