The Transformers franchise is going back to two of the filmmakers who helped make it a blockbuster phenomenon. Steven Spielberg is returning in a major creative role, while Michael Bay is in talks to direct the eighth live-action movie.

Paramount and Hasbro have brought Spielberg back to “focus on all creative aspects” of the next Transformers movie, working alongside longtime producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura. Spielberg will also serve as an executive producer and help guide the franchise’s overall creative direction.

Bay, meanwhile, is in talks to return to the director’s chair nearly a decade after Transformers: The Last Knight. The filmmaker reportedly wants final-cut rights as part of his deal, meaning negotiations are still being finalized.

The reunion represents a major return to the franchise’s original blockbuster formula. Spielberg and Bay previously worked together on the first Transformers movies, helping establish the series as a major cinematic property.

What We Know About the Next Transformers Movie

The upcoming film will be the eighth live-action installment in the franchise. Screenwriter Jason Fuchs, who worked on Wonder Woman and It: Chapter Two, is writing the screenplay, although specific plot details remain closely guarded.

The story is expected to be set in the modern day, but there is currently no announced cast. There is also no confirmed release date, meaning families shouldn’t expect to see the next Autobots adventure in theaters anytime soon.

The project comes as the newly formed Skydance-led Paramount looks to reinvigorate one of its biggest franchises. Bay’s potential return suggests the studio is betting on a familiar creative voice to help bring audiences back to the Transformers universe.

How Much Did Spielberg and Bay’s Transformers Movies Make?

Bay directed the first five live-action Transformers films, beginning with the 2007 original and ending with 2017’s The Last Knight. Together, those five movies earned approximately $4.38 billion worldwide, demonstrating just how successful the franchise became under his direction.

Spielberg’s involvement goes back to the beginning as well. He helped guide the creative direction of the first two films while serving as an executive producer, working with Bay and the filmmakers to establish the live-action version of the franchise.

Now, almost 20 years after the original Transformers hit theaters, the two Hollywood heavyweights are poised to work together again. For parents who introduced their kids to Optimus Prime through the movies or toys, the next installment could mark the start of a new era for the franchise.
