The new animated The Cat in the Hat is bringing Dr. Seuss’ beloved troublemaking feline back to the big screen, with comedian Bill Hader taking over the iconic voice role. However, early reviews suggest that while the movie has plenty of colorful animation and comedy, critics are divided over whether this new adventure captures the magic of the original story.

The movie follows the mischievous Cat as he takes on a challenging assignment to cheer up siblings Gabby and Sebastian, who are struggling to adjust after moving to a new town. The film hits theatres Friday, November 6th in North America.

Bill Hader voices the famous feline, with an ensemble cast that includes Matt Berry, Quinta Brunson, Xochitl Gomez, Giancarlo Esposito and America Ferrera. Bowen Yang, Paula Pell and Tiago Martinez also lend their voices to the animated adventure.

Directed by Erica Rivinoja and Alessandro Carloni, the film expands considerably on the original children’s book, introducing a fantastical adventure involving magical technology, imaginative worlds and plenty of mischief.

What Are Reviews Saying About ‘The Cat in the Hat’?

Early reviews suggest that critics are split over whether the animated adaptation successfully brings Dr. Seuss’ classic story to life. Some appreciate the colorful animation, energetic performances and humor, while others feel the expanded storyline loses some of the original book’s charm.

In his review for The Hollywood Reporter, Frank Scheck says the movie “captures the antic silliness of Dr. Seuss without the charm.” He acknowledges that Hader delivers an entertaining performance but believes the film becomes more exhausting than enjoyable.

Not everyone agrees with that assessment. Deadline’s Pete Hammond describes the movie as “a genuine treat for everyone in the family,” praising its music, colorful visuals and entertainment value. Matt Berry’s performance as the family’s goldfish, Waffles, is another highlight.

3. Is ‘The Cat in the Hat’ Appropriate for Kids?

Despite the mixed critical reception, the animated The Cat in the Hat appears to be a family-friendly theatrical option. The movie carries a PG rating for rude humor, mild language, action and some peril, meaning parents should consider their children’s ages and sensitivity to potentially frightening scenes.

According to Screen Rant’s review, which gives the movie 5 out of 10, the expanded storyline doesn’t always work as intended. However, the colorful animation and familiar characters may still appeal to younger audiences.

Parents should also know that this isn’t necessarily a straightforward retelling of the original picture book. With fantastical adventures, strange creatures, slapstick comedy and plenty of chaotic behavior, some younger children may find certain sequences overwhelming. Ultimately, families familiar with Dr. Seuss’ original story may want to manage their expectations, but the movie could still provide an entertaining outing for kids who enjoy animated adventures.
