The popular gaming platform is facing congressional scrutiny after thousands of suspected child-exploitation reports

The U.S. Senate has launched a bipartisan investigation into Roblox’s child-safety practices, with Senators Dick Durbin and Josh Hawley requesting information from CEO David Baszucki about the platform’s users, safety systems, revenue and reports of inappropriate behavior. The senators are particularly concerned about allegations that adults have used Roblox to groom, exploit, extort and lure children into real-world meetings.
The investigation follows years of criticism of the platform’s ability to protect its youngest users. In their letter, the senators wrote that Roblox “trumpet[s] Roblox as a safe digital playground for children as young as five,” but said the public record raises serious questions about that promise.
Roblox has defended its safety efforts. Chief Safety Officer Matt Kaufman said the platform is “built on the foundation of safety” and that the company looks forward to explaining how it protects children.
The Numbers Behind the Investigation
One of the most alarming statistics is the number of suspected child sexual-exploitation incidents Roblox reported in 2025. According to the Senate’s investigation, Roblox reported 65,381 suspected cases to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children—more than twice the number reported in 2024.
The figure doesn’t necessarily mean actual abuse doubled, since increased reporting or improved detection could contribute to the rise. Nevertheless, the sheer scale has intensified questions about whether Roblox’s moderation and safety systems are keeping pace with its enormous young audience.
Roblox also has a massive reach: the company reported 132 million daily active users in July, making the platform far more than a traditional video game. It functions simultaneously as a gaming platform, social network, creator economy and entertainment destination.
What Should Parents Do?
For parents, the investigation is a reminder that Roblox should be treated as a social platform, not simply a collection of games. Children can communicate with strangers, encounter inappropriate content and potentially be approached by adults while playing.
PC Gamer reports that the Senate letter specifically cites allegations involving grooming, sexual abuse, kidnapping, rape and even murder connected to people children allegedly met through Roblox. Senator Hawley put the concern bluntly: “children on your platform are hurting. Congress will not look the other way.”
Parents should therefore regularly review their child’s privacy and communication settings, know who is on their friends list and discuss why children should never share personal information, move conversations to another app, keep secrets from parents or agree to meet an online acquaintance.
Most importantly, parents should keep the conversation open rather than simply banning the platform. If children know they can tell an adult about a disturbing message or interaction without immediately losing their device, they’re more likely to seek help when something goes wrong.
