A Virginia server said a customer’s “first date” at her restaurant was staged by a married couple who didn’t tell her.

Hannah Schmidt (@hannah__lynn16) described the evening in a TikTok video that has 655,800 views. Schmidt said it happened about eight months ago. The restaurant and the couple remain unnamed.

“I’ve been a server for six years, let me tell you about the most awkward experience I’ve ever had working in a restaurant,” Schmidt said at the start of the video.

She said a man sat at one of her tables and told her he was meeting a woman for a first date. Schmidt noted that he ordered a drink for himself and wanted to order his date a strawberry margarita.

He stopped her as she entered the order and said, “Go ahead and cancel the margarita; I’m not sure if that’s what she’s going to want.” Schmidt said she then brought him the Old Fashioned he had ordered.

Schmidt said the woman arrived about 20 minutes later and ordered a strawberry margarita. She said she joked to the man, “Oh, like you guessed right the first time, how funny.”

Schmidt noted, “he kind of gave me a look like I wasn’t supposed to say that.”

When Schmidt brought the drink, she said, the woman stopped her. Schmidt recalled the woman saying, “Excuse me, I’m so sorry, this man did not tell me that he was married.” She added, “I would like to pay my tab and leave.”

“Can you imagine the look on my face?” Schmidt said in the video.

Schmidt said she sided with the woman. “I am dogging this man, okay, I am all on her side,” she said.

She said she told the woman, “You shouldn’t even pay for your margarita; you should make him pay, and you should just walk out.”

The woman paid for her own drink and left for about 20 minutes.

The Woman Returned and the Couple Revealed They Are Married

Schmidt said the woman then came back to the restaurant. The two argued near the restroom before returning to the table together. She said she then learned they had been married for 20 years and that the encounter was part of their relationship.

“Could you have let me know that? Could you have informed me of what was going on? Because I just dogged this man, thinking that he was a scumbag for going on a date with you, when he was actually married to you,” Schmidt said in the video.

She said the couple then stayed at her table. “They sat at my table for two hours, and I didn’t know how to act. I’m all for you guys having fun in your relationship. But leave me out of it next time. Please, thank you,” Schmidt said

Commenters Are Divided Over the Server’s Reaction

TikTok viewers share mixed reactions to Hannah Schmidt’s account, with some supporting her and others questioning her response. BY: @HANNAH__LYNN16/TIKTOK

Some commenters sided with Schmidt. “Lowkey that’s an unconsensual kink they just forced you into playing into,” one wrote.

Another wrote, “You were an unpaid actress.” A third wrote, “Girl, I wish you didn’t feel bad; that’s on them with that weird ish.”

Others questioned her approach. “As a server, we are there to serve, not to judge. I don’t care what people tell me; it’s poker face and ‘Absolutely, Sir’ to every request,” one commenter wrote.

Another wrote, “I understand what the man did is wrong, but at the end of the day, do your job and be a professional; get out your damn feelings when it comes to a customer.”
