I am always on the lookout for new books for my two kiddos. While I may not always enjoy playing with toys, I am always reading to read aloud to my babies. I recently received the opportunity to review a new children’s book entitled Welcome to Foxyland: Great Adventures of Little Foxycat by Wald Peterson. Always one to grow my home library, I eagerly accepted the review copy to read with my children.
Author
Wald Peterson grew up in Bulgaria and dreamed of becoming an astronaut, flying to space toward adventures. As an adult, he earned degrees in aerospace technologies and project management, eventually working for companies related to space and information technology. However, Wald also loved drawing and reading as a little boy. His parents stoked his creativity through drawings by his mother and woodcarvings from his father. For over fifteen years, Wald has been writing poems and short stories for the enjoyment of his family and friends. Welcome to Foxyland: Great Adventures of Little Foxycat is his first published children’s book.
Price
The paperback version of Welcome to Foxyland: Great Adventures of Little Foxycat by Wald Peterson arrives in September at the retail price of $8.99. Compared to other children’s books of similar length, the title is reasonably price. The book is currently available from Amazon and other booksellers in English, German, and Russian editions.
Story
Recommended for readers between the ages of 5 and 11, Welcome to Foxyland: Great Adventures of Little Foxycat follows the adventures of a curious and imaginative little boy named Foxycat. Foxycat must explore his village to find the ingredients his mother needs to bake his favorite dessert, homemade pie. While visiting Uncle Beaver to pick up a bread board and rolling pin, Mr. Hams for some flour, and farmer Bob for fresh milk, Foxycat learns that his everyday world is already full of wonder. And, with his imagination, he is free to run even wilder.
The story is fairly long for a picture book, so I agree with the recommended age range. Most fascinating, the descriptive words in Welcome to Foxyland: Great Adventures of Little Foxycat paint such a vivid picture of Foxycat and his ordinary but great adventures. My three-year-old daughter sat through the entire book as I read the story aloud, meaning that, although long, the book can appeal to younger readers as well. Even I found myself interested in the story, and I look forward to reading more adventures in Foxyland in the future. I therefore rate the story in Welcome to Foxyland: Great Adventures of Little Foxycat very highly.
Illustrations
In addition to the descriptive language, Wald Peterson creates a fantastical and warm new world filled with bright and expressive illustrations in Welcome to Foxyland: Great Adventures of Little Foxycat. Each page of the book features bold and colorful pictures that bring the story to life. My daughter especially liked looking for Foxycat, who is either a fox cub or a kitten, throughout the pages. My infant son also seemed to enjoy looking at the brightly colored pictures. The illustration style of the book reflects the imaginative and whimsical story. I thus rate the pictures in Welcome to Foxyland: Great Adventures of Little Foxycat very highly.
Final Verdict
If your young reader enjoys stories that feature friendship, discovery, and learning as central theme, definitely pick up a copy of Welcome to Foxyland: Great Adventures of Little Foxycat by Wald Peterson. Recommended for readers between the ages of 5 and 11, the book tells the story of Foxycat as he embarks on an adventure both everyday and extraordinary. I especially like the bold and colorful illustrations, which help bring the whimsical story to life. I very much recommend Welcome to Foxyland: Great Adventures of Little Foxycat to all little readers.
