A New Skywalker Trilogy Is Taking Shape
The Skywalker family may be heading back to a galaxy far, far away. Deadline’s report on a new Star Wars trilogy says Lucasfilm has tapped Jon Watts to direct the first movie in a new Star Wars trilogy written by Simon Kinberg, with the project intended to continue the Skywalker Saga.
For parents who grew up with Star Wars, Watts is a familiar name from another major franchise. He directed Tom Holland in Spider-Man: Homecoming, Far From Home and No Way Home. In the Star Wars Universe, Watts also co-creating the series Skeleton Crew.
The new project would reunite Watts with the franchise while giving him a much larger theatrical canvas. His experience balancing young characters, family-friendly adventure and blockbuster storytelling could make his Star Wars return particularly interesting for families.
What We Know About the Story and Cast
Very few story details have been revealed, but reports indicate that the trilogy would continue the Skywalker Saga following The Rise of Skywalker. The Hollywood Reporter describes it as the “next chapter” of the saga, while the project has also been referred to as a potential Episode X.
Daisy Ridley is reportedly expected to return as Rey in some capacity, although exactly how she would fit into the new story has not been revealed. No additional casting has been officially announced, and Disney has not yet publicly confirmed a release date.
The project is also not yet fully locked in. Reports say it remains in development and has not received an official Disney green light, although it is reportedly among Lucasfilm’s more advanced movie projects.
The Saga That Was Supposed to Be Finished
The news is notable because The Rise of Skywalker was marketed as the conclusion of the nine-film Skywalker story. When the movie arrived in 2019, Lucasfilm itself called it “the final film of the Skywalker saga,” bringing together the original, prequel and sequel trilogies.
Entertainment Weekly notes that the original Skywalker Saga encompasses Episodes I through IX, spanning multiple generations of Luke Skywalker’s family. The new trilogy would therefore extend a story that audiences had previously been told had reached its endpoint.
For families discovering Star Wars today, that could mean the familiar Skywalker story is about to become much larger. Whether the new films focus primarily on Rey or introduce another generation remains one of the biggest unanswered questions surrounding the project.
