A woman said she came home from a first date she called “absolutely f—ing horrific” after a man she met on Hinge made remarks she found offensive and asked how the bill would be paid. TikTok creator @saphibartlett shared her account in a video recorded after the date, and she did not name the man or the bar.
“I’m home from my date. I don’t know where to begin. What is going on?” she said in the video.
Date Was Set Up After Only a Few Messages

She said the two had exchanged only a handful of messages on the app. They joked about one of her profile prompts, and he then proposed a night, time and venue for drinks.
She accepted the night and time but rejected the venue, which she called “a really f—ing grim place to go for a drink.” She suggested a cocktail bar instead. She said his reply was, “Oh yeah, it was just a test, haha.”
She said, “I really tried to take that as, like, he was being sarcastic.”
Her Doubts Began Within Seconds

She said the man was good-looking and well-spoken. She still lost interest almost immediately. “Within about three seconds, I could just tell. I could just tell he wasn’t for me,” she said.
The woman said she agreed to a second drink out of politeness. “How do you come on a date for an hour and then say you want to leave?” she said.
Private School Remarks Became the Turning Point

She said, “The conversation turned to schooling.” The man talked about attending private school and about classmates who later appeared on the TV show Made in Chelsea.
At one point, she said, he asked her, “I don’t mean to sound condescending, but have you ever been to France?”
She said she told him she had been to France. Later, she mentioned that she had also attended private school. She said he reacted with complete shock and told her, “Well, you must have been wearing a mask this whole night because you would never know.”
She said she replied, “F—ing hell, thanks.” She then said, “You just literally said you can’t imagine me going to private school,” and described the exchange as “the tip of the iceberg.”
She said he made other comments she could no longer recall.
She Kept Her Job to Herself While He Talked About His

She said she chose not to tell him what she does for a living. “I just said, like, I was in beauty and marketing, which is kind of true,” she said.
He spoke repeatedly about his own career and home. She described him mentioning “the really good job that he’s got” and a two-bedroom Manchester apartment “with a 360 view of Manchester.” Her reaction, she said, was: “Okay, congratulations.”
He Asked How the Bill Would Be Paid

When the bill arrived, she said, the man asked, “Oh, how are we doing this? Are you paying it in one? Are you splitting it?”
She said the table went quiet for a second or two. She then told him, “Oh, we can split it if you want,” and they divided the cost.
She said she holds a general view on first-date etiquette. “I do think, generally speaking, a man should pay.” Because she was not interested in him, she said, she let it go. She described the moment as “Icky, icky, icky, icky.”
The Woman Called the Evening Draining
She said the date left her tired and out of pocket. “It’s draining because I just spent so much time getting ready.” And she said, “It’s draining because I’ve just spent money that I don’t really want to be spending.”
She closed the recording with a request. She asked whether anyone had “a lovely single brother or cousin” they could vouch for. “I actually am getting bored of doing these dates,” she said.
The recording did not include the man’s response.
