A video filmed at a Food Lion in Kinston, North Carolina, showed an older white man making remarks about race to a Black woman at the checkout.

A local outlet identified the woman who recorded the exchange as Candy Tilghman, and it credited the image in its report to X/@Longtimehistory.

“I don’t care, record me all you want,” the man said in the clip.

He made the comment after Tilghman told him she was filming. The exchange has since drawn wide attention online.

Tilghman was standing in line at the Food Lion when an older white man behind her began cursing and ranting within earshot. Another outlet that also covered the clip identified the store as the one on Vernon Avenue in Kinston.

In the video, the man appeared to explain how the exchange began. “But then she had to be shty,” he said. He then made a remark about Black people. “The Blacks think they own the f—ing world, but they don’t,” he said.

Tilghman responded by telling the man to stop. “Don’t go there, sir,” she said, making it clear she was recording him.

The man seemed unbothered by the camera. “I don’t care, record me all you want,” he answered.

The Man Said He Used No Slurs

The man then argued that his words were not offensive. “I ain’t said nothing but Black. I ain’t told you no ugly word,” he said in the clip.

He went on to describe himself. “I’m white. So I don’t care who you are. And I’m proud of it,” he added.

The companion eventually coaxed the man into a different checkout aisle. By then, it was too late, because the recording had already been made.

The clip showed the exchange continuing until the man was moved away from Tilghman’s lane. The reports reviewed did not say how long the encounter lasted.

What Is Not Known

The Nerd Stash reported that it found no statement from Food Lion about the incident when it published. It also reported no police involvement and that the man has not been publicly identified.

No report said whether anyone at the store asked him to leave or whether any charges followed. The portions of the reports reviewed for this story included no comment from Tilghman beyond what was heard in the video.
