Back-to-school shopping can quickly lead to high shopping bills, especially when your kids need (or want) a new wardrobe to help start the year. However, one retailer is offering a program to get rid of your old clothes and save on new ones for a limited time.
If you have old denim lying around—last year’s jeans or a worn-out denim jacket—you can take it to Target for their new trade-in program and grab a 20% discount on new clothing. The old items must be denim; the discount applies only to your new denim purchase.
How To Trade In & Collect Your Discount
You’ll need to trade in your old items in-store and can drop off up to five denim items in the boxes provided. These can be in any condition, from the merely outgrown to the falling apart. It doesn’t matter, as long as its denim, Target stores will be accepting the items.
Then, you’ll receive a promo code to add to your Target Circle account. If you’re not already a member, Target Circle is the company’s free-to-join member loyalty program that gives shoppers 1% cash back on all purchases and offers discounts and coupons year-round. If you have the company’s in-store credit card, the Target Circle card, you’ll also receive an additional 5% off your denim purchase.
Where & When To Use The Discount
The discount applies to your entire denim purchase, whether you buy one item or a whole new wardrobe. It also applies whether you shop in-store, in the app, or on the website.
It even applies if you use Order Pickup or the same-day delivery options!
To locate your nearest Target store, visit their location finder and input your zip code.
What Are The Benefits?
The benefits for the consumer are obvious. You’re getting a discount on the clothes you were going to buy anyway, and you can finally get rid of that box of jeans you’ve been hauling around in the trunk, promising yourself you were eventually going to drop it in the donation box.
Target is looking at the bigger picture. The United States annually creates about 17 million tons of textile waste. That’s over 100 lb of discarded clothing and fabric products per person per year, and according to The Roundup, it’s partly because we’ve changed the way we experience clothing and fashion. Our wardrobes are less sustainable than in the past, and we wear a piece of clothing about half as many times before tossing it.
In fact, on average, about a third of our unwanted clothing ends up in landfills, and a significant portion of the rest ends up burned. Only about 15% is recycled.
Target aims to increase the percentage of its denim that’s recycled, with the denim it collects going back to factories for recycling and repurposing.
What’s The Deadline For The Target Denim Trade-In Program?
Hurry if you’re interested in participating in Target’s denim trade-in program. The offer is good through Saturday, August 10th.
Target does run a similar program annually with car seat trade-ins, so if this is successful, it’s possible we’ll see it pop back up again in the future.
