As a former librarian and homeschooling mom, I am always on the lookout for new books for my kids. While my daughter, my son, and I frequently visit the local library, I also believe in having a home library, especially for my children. I especially like reference books, which I can use as I educate my kiddos. My daughter also really enjoys looking through big books of information. Thus, when recently offered the chance to review My Body: Explained and Illustrated written by Antje Helms and illustrated by Golden Section Graphic from Little Gestalten, I eagerly accepted the opportunity.
Price
My Body: Explained and Illustrated written by Antje Helms and illustrated by Golden Section Graphic currently costs $20.37 on Amazon but retails for $24.95. With 48 pages of vivid illustrations and engaging texts, the book compares in price to other similar reference books about the human body for children. Each page is packed full of information and accompanying pictures that make learning about anatomy and physiology fun. The large book measures 9.6 by 0.4 by 11.2 inches. I would definitely pay the current price, so I rate the price very positively.
Text
Recommended for readers between the ages of 8 and 11 in third through seventh grade, My Body: Explained and Illustrated explains the ways in which the human body works through images and text created for children and fascinating for adults. Twenty-three chapters cover the body from the skeleton through reproduction. The text is appropriate for the recommended age range. My daughter is four-and-a-half-years-old and is reading at a first grade level. She can read quite a bit of the basic text but still has trouble with some of the more advanced words. Stylistically, the text features simple structures, which help make understanding the complex information easier. I especially like the highlighting of the most important words such as circulatory system, artery, capillaries, and veins. The book answers common questions such as how bones heal and why baby teeth fall out. I will definitely use My Body for many years to come as my kids and I explore human anatomy and physiology.
Illustrations
The full color illustrations in My Body: Explained and Illustrated are simple, colorful and spot-on. My toddler son already enjoys flipping through the pages and looking at the pictures. He is working on learning the names for the parts of the body, and he loves hearing me tell him the words as he points at the illustrations. The drawn pictures from Golden Section Graphic simply but accurately bring the text to life, making the dense information about the human body easier to understand. Even as an adult, I enjoy pouring over the illustrations with my daughter. She also finds the pictures quite fascinating. My Body makes teaching and learning about human anatomy and physiology fun and easy.
