As an avid reader and gardener, I love sharing books about gardening with my two young children. Both my preschooler daughter and toddler son have been helping me outside in the yard with my plants all spring and summer. My daughter especially loves reading books that relate to our current activities and endeavors. Thus, when recently offered the chance to review Let’s Garden: A Step by Step Introduction written by Clara Lidstrom and Annakarin Nyberg and illustrated by Katy Kimbell and Li Soderberg from Little Gestalten in exchange for my honest opinion, I eagerly accepted the opportunity to expand my home library.

Recommended for readers between the ages of 7 and 10 in second through fifth grade, Let’s Garden: A Step by Step Introduction is a DIY book full of great gardening ideas that do not require sophisticated equipment or a large yard. I agree that the text is appropriate for the recommended age range. My daughter is four-and-a-half-years-old and is reading at a first grade level. She can already read much of the book with only a little bit of help. The eleven chapters are filled with gardening ideas, crafts, games, information, tips, recipes, and more. My daughter wants to do all the activities. I plan to continue referencing Let’s Garden with my children for many years to come.
Illustrations
The illustrations in Let’s Garden: A Step by Step Introduction are a mix of photographs and drawings. The photographs are quite eye-catching and inspiring. For example, I love feeding the birds that live around my home, and I have been considering making my own suet feeders. The photo that accompanies the recipe for bird food in the book is so pretty that I really want to try making my own. The drawings help illustrate the text perfectly so that young readers can better understand the concepts explained throughout the book.
