I always make at least two pies for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Two of my holiday favorites include pumpkin pie and pecan pie. For Thanksgiving this year, my daughter asked me to make her a chocolate pie. As a chocolate lover myself who had never made a chocolate pie from scratch before, I granted her request. The homemade chocolate pie with a graham cracker crust was a definite success. In fact, I could not get a photo of the finished cooled pie because my family cut into the dessert too quickly!
Ingredients
Pie crust
- 8 ounces of graham crackers
- 1/4 cup of white sugar
- 3/4 cup of butter
Pie filling
- 1/2 cup of cocoa powder
- 1/4 cup of cornstarch
- 1 1/2 cups of white sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon of salt
- 1 teaspoon of vanilla
- 3 egg yolks
- 2 cups of whole milk
Directions
- Preheat the oven to 350°.
- Crumb the graham crackers.
- Combine the graham cracker crumbs with the white sugar.
- Melt the butter.
- Pour the melted butter over the graham cracker mixture.
- Stir to combine.
- Press the graham cracker mixture into the bottom and sides of a pie pan.
- Bake the pie crust for 10 minutes.
- Combine the cocoa powder, cornstarch, white sugar, salt, and vanilla in a medium sauce pan.
- Lightly beat the egg yolks.
- Stir the beaten egg yolks into the cocoa mixture.
- Place the sauce pan over medium heat.
- Slowly stir in the milk.
- Cook the pie filling until thickened. Stir continuously.
- Pour the hot filling into the pie crust.
- Allow the chocolate pie to set and cool.
- Refrigerate.
- Serve the chocolate pie cold with whipped cream.
