Storyline
When Hexside's annual Grom dance approaches, Luz is excited to experience the magical school's version of prom. However, she quickly learns that Grom is far more dangerous than a typical school dance. The event centers around Grompromise, a tradition where one student is chosen to face Grom—a shape-shifting monster that transforms into its victim's worst fear. When Amity is selected as this year's Grom Queen, Luz notices her friend's distress and volunteers to take her place, unaware of the true challenge ahead.
As Luz confronts Grom, the creature takes the form of her mother, forcing Luz to face her deepest fear: her mother discovering she's been lying about attending summer camp and has actually been training to become a witch in the Demon Realm. When Luz becomes overwhelmed, Amity steps in to help, and Grom transforms into Amity's own fear—rejection after asking someone to Grom. The two girls must work together, combining their magic and supporting each other emotionally, to defeat the monster and save the dance. Their partnership and mutual understanding ultimately prove stronger than their individual fears.
What parents say
Parents have praised "Enchanting Grom Fright" for its thoughtful representation and emotional depth. Many parents note that the episode handles LGBTQ+ themes with age-appropriate sensitivity, particularly appreciating how Amity's fear of rejection is portrayed with genuine emotion without being the sole focus of her character. The reveal that Amity's note was intended for Luz has been celebrated by parents as a natural, sweet moment of representation that sparked meaningful conversations with their children about different types of crushes and relationships.
Parents have also complimented the episode's central metaphor of facing one's fears, with several noting that the Grom monster concept provided an accessible way to discuss anxiety with younger viewers. Some parents mention using the episode as a springboard to talk about the pressure of keeping secrets from family, as Luz's fear about lying to her mother resonated with children who understood the weight of dishonesty. The supportive friendship between Luz and Amity, where they help each other through difficult moments, has been highlighted by parents as a positive model of healthy relationships and emotional vulnerability.
What kids learn
This episode teaches children that facing fears becomes easier when you have support from people who care about you. Luz and Amity both struggle with deeply personal anxieties, but by working together and being vulnerable with each other, they find the strength to overcome what seemed impossible alone. Children learn that asking for help and accepting support from friends is not a sign of weakness but rather a demonstration of courage and trust.
The episode also explores the consequences and emotional weight of keeping secrets from loved ones. Luz's greatest fear manifests as her mother discovering her lies about summer camp, showing children that dishonesty—even when motivated by good intentions—creates ongoing anxiety and stress. This provides an opportunity for kids to understand why honesty with family members matters and how secrets can become burdens that grow heavier over time.
Additionally, children learn about empathy and selflessness through Luz's decision to take Amity's place as Grom Queen. Even though Luz doesn't fully understand what she's volunteering for, she recognizes her friend's distress and acts to help. The episode demonstrates that true friendship means being willing to support others through their challenges, while also showing that it's okay to have fears and insecurities of your own.
Parents' top 5 questions
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What is Grom and why is it dangerous? | Grom is both the name of Hexside's school dance and the shape-shifting monster that appears during it. One student is chosen as Grom Queen or King and must battle the creature, which transforms into whatever that person fears most. The tradition exists because if Grom isn't defeated, it will escape and terrorize the town. Luz volunteers to fight Grom in Amity's place, not fully understanding the psychological challenge of confronting her deepest fear made manifest. |
| What does Luz fear most? | Luz's greatest fear is her mother discovering that she's been lying about attending summer camp and has actually been in the Demon Realm learning magic. Grom transforms into Luz's mother, Camila, confronting her about the deception. This fear reflects Luz's guilt over lying to someone she loves and her anxiety about the consequences when the truth eventually comes out, showing the emotional burden that dishonesty creates. |
| What is Amity afraid of and how is it revealed? | Amity's fear is rejection after asking someone to be her date to Grom. When she helps Luz fight the monster, Grom transforms into Amity's fear, taking the form of Luz rejecting a note Amity had written. The episode reveals through this moment that Amity had wanted to ask Luz to Grom, indicating she has romantic feelings for her. The scene is handled gently and age-appropriately within the context of their friendship. |
| How do Luz and Amity defeat Grom? | After both girls face their individual fears, they realize they're stronger together. They join hands and combine their magic, performing an improvised dance-battle that allows them to work in sync against the monster. Their coordinated movements and mutual trust enable them to overpower Grom's shape-shifting attacks. The defeat comes not from raw magical power but from their emotional connection and willingness to support each other through vulnerability. |
| Is this episode appropriate for younger children? | The episode contains some tense moments as Grom takes frightening forms, including a spider-like creature and emotionally manipulative versions of loved ones. However, the scares are balanced with humor and resolution. The LGBTQ+ representation is subtle and age-appropriate, presented as a natural part of the story. Most children who have been comfortable with previous episodes will handle this one well, though parents may want to discuss themes of honesty and different types of relationships afterward. |
