Storyline

In this episode, animal orthotist Derrick Campana travels to Long Beach, California, to meet the Wackerman-Nulty family and their young puppy, Colby. Colby was born with ectrodactyly, a congenital limb deformity affecting one of his front legs, which makes it difficult for him to walk, run, and play like other dogs his age. The family is eager to give Colby the best quality of life possible, and they've reached out to Derrick for help in creating a solution that will allow their puppy to move more comfortably and confidently.

Derrick examines Colby's unique anatomy and takes careful measurements to design a custom prosthetic device tailored specifically to the puppy's needs. Throughout the episode, viewers watch as Derrick works through the design and fabrication process, testing different materials and adjustments to ensure the prosthetic fits properly and supports Colby's mobility. The episode culminates in Colby trying on his new device, with the family and Derrick observing how the puppy adapts to his prosthetic and begins to experience greater freedom of movement.

What kids learn

Children watching this episode learn about compassion and problem-solving when it comes to animals with special needs. Colby's story demonstrates that physical differences or disabilities don't diminish an animal's worth or potential for a happy life. Kids see how Derrick approaches Colby's limb deformity not as something to pity, but as a challenge that can be addressed through creativity, patience, and specialized care. This teaches empathy and the importance of adapting solutions to meet individual needs rather than expecting everyone to fit the same mold.

The episode also introduces children to the field of animal orthotics and prosthetics, showing that careers in science and engineering can directly improve lives. Kids observe the step-by-step process of measuring, designing, and testing a custom device, which reinforces lessons about perseverance and the value of trial and error. They learn that helping others—whether human or animal—often requires technical skill, careful observation, and a willingness to adjust plans when something doesn't work perfectly the first time.

Additionally, children gain insight into responsible pet ownership and the commitment families make when they adopt animals with medical challenges. The Wackerman-Nulty family's dedication to Colby models kindness, responsibility, and the understanding that love and care sometimes require extra effort and resources.

Parents' top 5 questions

QuestionAnswer
Is the medical content appropriate for young children? The episode handles Colby's limb deformity in a gentle, age-appropriate manner. Derrick explains ectrodactyly in simple terms, and the focus remains on the solution rather than dwelling on the medical problem. There are no graphic images or distressing scenes. Children see Colby as a happy puppy who needs some extra help, and the tone throughout is hopeful and positive, making it suitable for elementary-aged viewers and up.
Will this episode make my child sad or worried about animals? While the episode acknowledges that Colby faces a physical challenge, the overall tone is uplifting and solution-focused. Children see Colby playing, interacting with his family, and ultimately gaining improved mobility through Derrick's work. The episode emphasizes resilience and the positive impact of helping animals in need, so most children come away feeling inspired rather than sad. The family's love for Colby is evident throughout, which reassures young viewers.
What will my child learn about disabilities and differences? This episode teaches children that physical differences don't define an individual's value or potential. Kids see that with creativity and the right support, challenges can be overcome or managed effectively. Derrick's respectful, problem-solving approach models how to respond to differences with empathy and action rather than pity. The episode normalizes the idea that some animals and people need adaptive equipment, and that this is simply one way we care for those who need extra help.
Does the episode show the prosthetic-making process in detail?Yes, the episode walks viewers through Derrick's process of measuring Colby, designing the prosthetic, and testing the fit. Children see the hands-on work involved in creating a custom device, including adjustments and problem-solving when the first attempt may not be perfect. This behind-the-scenes look demystifies assistive technology and shows kids that engineering and design are practical skills used to solve real-world problems, making it educational as well as heartwarming.
Is this episode part of a larger series format?Yes, each episode of The Wizard of Paws follows Derrick Campana as he travels to help a different animal with mobility challenges. This episode with Colby is self-contained, so children don't need to have seen previous episodes to understand or enjoy the story. The consistent format helps kids know what to expect: a problem is introduced, Derrick designs a solution, and the animal's quality of life improves, providing a reassuring and predictable structure.
