Storyline
In this episode of Big Blue, Phil the remora fish forms an unexpected friendship with another remora and decides to bring his new companion aboard the Calypso for an extended visit. The arrival of Phil's friend creates tension among the regular crew members, who are accustomed to Phil's loyalty and presence as part of their tight-knit group. The crew struggles with feelings of jealousy and uncertainty as they watch Phil divide his attention and enthusiasm between his old friends and his new best friend.
As the episode unfolds, the Calypso Crew must navigate their discomfort and learn to welcome the newcomer rather than view him as a threat to their friendship with Phil. The story explores how friendships can expand and change without diminishing existing bonds, challenging the crew to be more inclusive and understanding. Through their interactions, the characters discover that opening their circle to new friends can enrich rather than replace the relationships they already treasure.
What kids learn
This episode offers children valuable lessons about friendship dynamics and the natural evolution of social circles. Kids learn that when a close friend makes a new friend, it doesn't mean they are being replaced or that the original friendship is less important. The story demonstrates that friendships can grow and expand to include new people without diminishing the value of existing relationships, helping children understand that their friends are allowed to have other friends too.
Young viewers also learn about managing feelings of jealousy and insecurity when friendship groups change. The episode shows that these uncomfortable emotions are normal but that acting on them by excluding others or withdrawing can make situations worse. Instead, children see the importance of communicating their feelings and giving new people a fair chance rather than immediately viewing them as competition.
Additionally, the episode teaches the value of inclusivity and welcoming newcomers into established groups. Children learn that being open to new friendships and making others feel welcome strengthens communities rather than weakening them, and that there is room in our lives for multiple meaningful relationships.
Parents' top 5 questions
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| How can I help my child when their best friend makes a new close friend? | Use this episode as a starting point to validate your child's feelings while reframing the situation positively. Explain that friendships naturally expand and that their friend having other close relationships doesn't diminish their special bond. Encourage your child to get to know the new friend rather than competing for attention, and remind them that they too can have multiple close friendships. Help them identify what makes their friendship unique and irreplaceable. |
| What should I do if my child feels left out when friendship groups change? | Acknowledge that feeling left out is painful and completely normal. Talk about the crew's initial uneasiness in the episode and how they worked through it. Encourage your child to express their feelings directly to their friend rather than withdrawing or acting out. Help them understand the difference between actually being excluded and simply sharing a friend's time with others. If exclusion is genuinely happening, discuss strategies for finding additional friendships and activities. |
| How do I teach my child to be welcoming when new kids join their friend group? | Point out how the Calypso Crew's initial resistance created unnecessary tension and how things improved when they became more welcoming. Discuss how being the new person feels and remind your child of times they were new to a situation. Role-play inclusive behaviors like introducing the new person to others, including them in conversations, and finding common interests. Praise your child when you notice them making inclusive choices in their own social situations. |
| Is jealousy in friendships normal for young children? | Yes, jealousy in friendships is completely developmentally normal, especially in elementary-aged children who are still learning to navigate complex social emotions. This episode validates those feelings by showing even the Calypso Crew experiences uneasiness. The key is teaching children to recognize jealous feelings, understand where they come from, and choose constructive responses rather than letting jealousy control their behavior. With guidance, children learn that multiple friendships can coexist without threatening each other. |
| What if my child is the one bringing a new friend into an established group? | Help your child understand that their existing friends might need time to adjust and may feel uncertain about the change. Encourage them to be patient and intentional about including everyone, making introductions, and creating opportunities for their different friends to connect. Remind them to maintain one-on-one time with their original friends while also pursuing new friendships. This episode shows that with sensitivity and effort, friend groups can successfully expand to welcome new members. |
