Storyline

In this episode, the Croods make an unexpected discovery when they stumble upon a man frozen solid in a block of ice. Curious and excited by their find, the family works together to thaw him out, revealing a prehistoric man who has been preserved for who knows how long. As the ice melts away and the stranger regains consciousness, Gran immediately recognizes him, and the family learns that this frozen figure is actually Hwam, a man from Gran's past with whom she once shared a romantic connection.

The episode explores the reunion between Gran and Hwam, bringing up old memories and unresolved feelings from their shared history. The family watches as Gran navigates this blast from her past, leading to both humorous moments and heartfelt exchanges. The arrival of Hwam creates new dynamics within the family as they learn more about Gran's younger days and the choices she made long ago, all while adjusting to having this unexpected guest in their midst.

What kids learn

Children watching this episode can learn valuable lessons about the complexity of relationships and the importance of understanding that the adults in their lives have rich histories and experiences that shaped who they are today. Gran's reunion with Hwam demonstrates that everyone has a past filled with meaningful connections, choices, and emotions that continue to matter even as time passes. Young viewers can gain appreciation for the fact that their parents and grandparents were once young themselves, with their own dreams, friendships, and romantic relationships.

The episode also teaches children about acceptance and open-mindedness when encountering new people or unexpected situations. The Croods' willingness to help thaw Hwam and welcome him, despite not knowing who he is initially, models curiosity and kindness toward strangers. Additionally, kids can observe how families support each other through emotionally complex moments, as the Croods rally around Gran during this surprising reunion.

Finally, the story offers lessons about how people change over time while still carrying important memories and feelings from their past. Children can begin to understand that growing older doesn't erase who you once were or the connections you made along the way.

Parents' top 5 questions

QuestionAnswer
Is the romantic content between Gran and Hwam appropriate for young children? The romantic elements in this episode are handled in a lighthearted, age-appropriate manner typical of the series. The focus is on the nostalgic reunion and the humor of Gran having a past love life, rather than anything overtly romantic or mature. The show uses the situation primarily for comedy and to add depth to Gran's character, making it suitable for the intended family audience without crossing into territory that would concern most parents.
How can I use this episode to talk with my child about older family members' pasts? This episode provides a natural opening to discuss how grandparents and older relatives had full lives before your child was born, including friendships, adventures, and relationships. You might ask your child what they think Gran was like when she was younger, or share age-appropriate stories about your own parents' or grandparents' younger days. This can help children see older family members as complete people with interesting histories worth exploring and respecting.
Does the episode handle the frozen-man premise in a scary way?The frozen-man concept is presented as a comedic and fantastical discovery rather than something frightening or disturbing. The show maintains its signature silly tone throughout, treating the ice-thawing as an adventure rather than a serious or scary situation. The focus quickly shifts to the relationship storyline once Hwam is revived, so younger viewers shouldn't find the premise unsettling, especially given the show's established cartoon style and humor.
What family dynamics are explored in this episode? The episode explores how families react when they learn new information about their older members, particularly when those revelations involve romantic pasts. The Croods' responses to discovering Gran had a previous love interest provide opportunities to see how family members support each other through surprises and emotional moments. The storyline also touches on themes of family history and how understanding where our relatives came from can bring families closer together and create new appreciation for one another.
Are there any lessons about making choices or moving forward in life? The reunion between Gran and Hwam naturally raises questions about the paths people choose and how those decisions shape their lives. While the episode keeps things light, it subtly addresses the idea that people make choices based on what matters most to them at the time, and those choices lead to the families and lives they build. This can spark gentle conversations about decision-making and appreciating the life you have while acknowledging roads not taken.
